Father's Day Craft Ideas - How To Make a Candy Jar

Oh my goodness it has been a fast and furious week. I have been meaning to post more often but have had some things come up. A family friend passed away this week and it has been really sad. No one (not even the friend) knew he was so incredibly sick. He started having a few symptoms, finally went to the doctor and they determined he had cancer basically all over. He hung on for less than a week after diagnosis and sadly passed on.

Gosh! This is turning out to be a depressing post! Let's talk crafting instead!

As you know, Father's Day is fast approaching. I've still got to get the stuff together to make my Dad a shadow box. Just seems like there aren't enough hours in the day!

If your Dad enjoys sitting in the recliner and snacking while watching TV then this may be a neat gift to make for Dad.

Candy Jar

Materials Needed:

Glass Jar with hinged lid
Glass paint
Paint brush
Dad's favorite candy

Buy a glass jar with hinged lid at your local craft store. Using glass paint paint a picture on the jar. Consider painting a fish, golf ball, baseball, or whatever you think your Dad will like.

Be sure to pay attention to washing instructions when considering on glass paint. You may need to point out to Dad that the jar can only be handwashed so the paint job doesn't ruin.

Fill the jar with Dad's favorite candy!

Father's Day Craft Ideas - Handprint Poem

Sure, most Dads do not enjoy having to scrub off little painted handprints or crayone drawings from the wall or furniture. But one day when that little one is all grown up, ol' Dad will be wishing he could see that little kid handprint just one more time.

How about making a handprint card? That cute little handprint can be cherished forever!

Materials Needed:

One piece of construction paper
Paint (that can easily be washed off child's hand)

Have your child cover his/her handprint in the paint and lay his/her hand on the construction paper. Allow the paint to dry. Be sure to write the date and name of the child on front of the paper.

Also, include this poem with the artwork. I don't know who wrote this poem but it's really cute.

My Handprint

Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints
On furniture and walls
But everyday I'm growing big
And soon I'll be very tall
Then all my little handprints
Will be hard to recall
So here's a special handprint
Just so that you can say
this is how my fingers looked
when I placed them here today.

Father's Day Craft Ideas - Make a Pinto Bean Sign

Oh how I loved making these sign as a kid! They are so simple but so fun. They are perfect for ages 4-7 years old. I remember that making this Father's Day Craft could be messy but gosh it was fun being able to play with those pinto beans!

Materials Needed:
1 piece of construction paper
Elmer's glue
1 bag of dried pinto beans

Have the child create a picture on the construction paper using dried pinto beans. They can glue the bean using Elmer's glue. For instance, they could spell out "HI DAD" with the pinto beans or they may want to create a smiley face. Let them be creative!

Father's Day Craft Ideas - How to Make a Garbage Bag Wreath

As with some of my other blogs that I have posted on this Memorial Day, I want to first take time to thank all of our brave men and women who have served our country so that we here in the U.S.A. have freedom. I also want to thank those who are currently serving in our military. A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!

Also, if you have seen my blog called Craft Ideas you will know that I used this same craft idea there. But I like this craft idea for a Father's Day Gift too. The kids could make this for Dad but use different embellishments. Keep reading to discover different embellishments to use for a Father's Day Wreath.

Now, for a bit of crafting talk.

If you are looking for an easy craft that even the kids enjoy doing then consider a making a wreath from garbage bags. I have to warn you that this craft takes a very long time to do.

Here's what you will need:

One wire clothes hanger
Garbage bags (they come in various colors so you choose your color)
Embellishments

Instructions:

Undo wire clothes hanger. You do this by untwisting it. Then straighten out the clothes hanger but be sure to leave the hook that is already in the hanger. Now shape the clothes hanger into a circle and twist the end so that it form a complete circle.

Cut strips of garbage bags. There is no telling how many strips you will need. But for length try to cut them approximately 5 inches long. You can even experiment with the length to get the desired look.

Now begin tieing the strips onto the clothes hanger. You just tie the strips like you would tie a shoe but instead of a bow, tie a knot. As you finish tieing one strip, make sure that each strip is nestled tightly against the adjacent strip. Do this until all of the clothes hanger is covered but be sure not to tie any on the hanger.

Then embellish the wreath with your desired embellishments. For Father's Day Wreath Embellishments consider using fishing lures. Of course, before attaching the lure to the wreath break off the hooks. Don't let your kids do this because it is dangerous. Attach fishing corks if you are going for the fishing theme. Have your kids draw and cut out their hand prints from construction paper, even drawing and cutting out foot prints would be cute. These would make cute embellishments. If your Dad enjoys golf then go to the miniatures section of your local craft store and see if you can find miniature golf clubs. A golf ball and tees attached to the wreath would be to cute! Use your imagination!

Just hang the wreath using the exposed "hook" on the hanger.

Father's Day Craft Ideas - Shadow Box

Father's Day is fast approaching and what a better gift to give Dad than something handmade.

How about a shadow box?

A shadow box is so fun because you can get so creative with them. You can by the shadow box at most craft stores and then just fill it with the desired items. It's best if the items have a special meaning for Dad.

For instance, my Dad enjoys fishing. So for Father's Day I may consider making him a fishing shadow box. He's got a tackle box full of lures that he hasn't used in years. I plan on getting a couple of those, maybe a small roll of fishing line, some treble hooks, and pictures of us fishing. Then place all of those in the shadow box.

Maybe your Dad enjoys playing golf. Then you could place a golf ball, some tees, maybe one of his golf score cards in the box.

If you can't get your hands on some of his actual items then go to the craft shop and find miniatures that you could place in the shadow box.

Father's Day Craft Ideas - Create An Apron

I know, I know. Your Dad probably has more ties than he can shake a stick at. (That's country talk.) If he's like my Dad he probably has enough fishing stuff, or golf equipment to make a small fortune if he would ever part with it! By the way, that's not going to happen.

So what can you get him for Father's Day? It's really not that far away. As a matter of fact, Father's Day is June 18, 2006.

How about making him something? A lot of Dads enjoy cooking outside, grilling etc. How about making him an apron? They can be painted and personalized and he'll love it!

Here's what you need:

Canvas Apron (make sure it has been washed)
Fabric Paints
Possibly Paint Brushes

Be sure to read the instructions on your paints before applying. Decorate the apron how you wish using the fabric paints! Allow at least 24hrs to dry. Kids love to do this craft but it can be for "grown-ups" too. You can really get as fancy and decorative as you'd like. If you would like to add a bit of texture to the paint then dab the paint with a sponge, or for a more smoother look use paint brushes.
